‘Makeup for Asian women’ is written by Jacelyn Tay, one of Singapore’s leading actresses. Her own experiences in makeup, perfected by trial and error and her observations of the work of professional makeup artists have resulted in a great makeup book for Asian women, where she addresses most of the common problems Asian women face with makeup.
She explains how to do eye makeup on different Asian eye shapes: almond shaped (with narrow or thick double eyelids), small monolids, long monolids and round eyes. For someone who is beyond the basics of makeup, this will be the most interesting part of the book, but here and there were also other interesting things I picked up from this book.
Of course, this book contains a lot about the basic things of makeup, but she takes it a notch further by not only showing how to do eye makeup on the most common eye shapes, but also how you can shade and highlight parts of your face and fix ‘problems’ like close-set eyes, wide-set eyes, undefined bridge and certain face shapes, giving your face more definition. She also addresses the varieties in skin color of Asian women, ranging from fair, medium to dark and gives tips about which makeup colors look great on what skin color.

I know how to apply make up. Why would I need to attend make up artist school?
Many people think that transitioning from a makeup enthusiast into a professional makeup artist is an easy feat. However, as those in the makeup industry are well aware, a formal education really spells the difference between a hobby and a profession. Quality makeup training is not only important but essential if you plan on making a career of this interest. Makeup artist schools provide students with an impressive variety of skills that are nearly impossible to master on one’s own.

I was very lucky, actually, to work for eight years with Rona Barrett on her TV interview show doing makeup for many celebrities. Working with different people, I learned about the many varieties of skin tone and because each of these celebrities had a favorite makeup, I worked with many different products. Most of the makeups were much the same-very low in pigment and too orange, pink or yellow in color. Few colors really looked natural; you had to blend and mix a lot. I would end up creating colors that worked well for each of these people, and from mixing all of these colors and working with so many different consistencies and textures, I learned what made a good makeup.
And so I began experimenting, because I felt someone should change the products that were available to the professional makeup artist to make them more user-friendly. At about the same time, the lighting changed with the advent of fast film. The new low-light film emulsions and low-light television cameras didn’t require the subject to be lighted so intensely, which meant the colors of the make-ups needed to be changed to be more natural in appearance. It took me about 15 years, really, to develop the process for my makeup line.
