I think makeup is a crazy, creative, challenging, wonderful profession. Ive loved it all my life, and Ive also loved helping other creative people to become makeup artists. In 1985 I decided to write about all of the techniques Id invented or learned. My ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP COURSE took nearly two years of full time writing and research and has been extensively updated since. The Course is a massive compendium for home study of all the arts and crafts of character makeup and special effects. It is an incredibly detailed tool that youll refer to now, and for years to come throughout your career.
Airbrush Makeup FAQ, Page One of Two FAQ Pages
This page has recently been updated thanks to feedback from our Airbrush Customers.
1. What’s the difference between liquid makeup and airbrush makeup?
Airbrush makeup is ready to spray. Often you can make any liquid makeup ready to spray by adding a little water or silicone fluid. Airbrush makeup is also characterized by fine pigment size. The new Kryolan Air Stream makeup is a new generation of airbrush ready makeup that has all the advantages needed to be true airbrush makeup.
2. Airbrush makeup is so expensive, is it worth it?
That depends on how you value your time. An impatient actor doesn’t want to sit and watch you fuss with your formula, in that case get the stuff that is ready to spray, or measure out everything in advance. Before you invest in any airbrush ready makeups please do your homework. The new formulas (developed in the last 18 months) are excellent and certainly worth the extra cost. Expensive isn’t better either, buy a small amount to test before committing yourself to $300 worth of makeup.
3. There are so many different additives, which one should I use?
Kryolan, Mehron and Ben Nye all have additives of different formulations and strengths. Use what works best for you based on your experimentation. All water based additives can be used with water based paints. SES Polyset is very robust and not as expensive as most.

Makeup & Skincare – Makeup Artist Education and Certification Expert: Lauren Iverson – 8/17/2006
Question Hi there, I am extremely interested in becoming a makeup artist.Currently I reside in San Francisco,ca.I have taken several Cosmetology courses at a couple colleges but never completed the programs (only have 450 hrs) because I figured out that my true passion is makeup not hair or skin-care persay. Is there a certificate or specific dgree for makeup artists? Also, are there any online courses that you know of (besides scams).I noticed that all the makeup schools are in LA are there any schools up north? In your opinion is it worth starting my own portfolio with freelance gigs? And if so,how do you recommend I advertise myself having no formal experience?Ok,one last question: Any advice on a starter makeup kit that won’t bust the bank account? (ie:basic shades, brushes ect that will cover most people) Thanks so much and I admire you for achieving such a prestigous position doing what you love.Thats something I dream of. Laura Stamirowski
