Airbrush Makeup

Airbrush makeup is not a new concept to the makeup industry. It has been used in film for many years. Airbrush makeup was used in the movie Ben Hur in 1922. It was then used as a fast technique of applying makeup to many actors. Airbrush makeup picked up a bit more popularity in the 1970s. It was originally thought of as an area of specialty in the cosmetic world.

Today, airbrush makeup is on the rise in popularity due partially to the increase in technology such as digital pictures and digital television and its long-lasting durability. In the past, film and television makeup was exaggerated so that the actors did not appear to be washed out. Some makeup had to be applied darker than normal to be seen in the bright lights while other times colors choices were limited due to the color of light. Cameras, lighting, and viewing quality were not as clear and exact. The viewers could not see lines in the makeup; therefore, the lines were not quite defined. Makeup covering facial imperfections such as blemishes and scars was less visible. Many touch-ups were needed. In other cases, film speed greatly affected the makeup, making everything visible. The makeup artist needed to be concerned with film sensitivity before applying makeup. Today, digital pictures and digital television have enhanced faces so that every line, blemish, and blend can be seen clearly. Close-up shots are common. As a result, today’s film and television makeup have adjusted to the need for perfection and precision by relying on airbrush makeup.

On stage, one’s features must be clearly visible to everyone sitting in the theater, even the people in the very back row. Both male and female actors use basic stage makeup techniques to enhance their natural features, correct or diminish other features, and change their appearance. Often, a role calls for “character†makeup, such as stylized fairies, animals, or a look of old age. Makeup can accomplish all of these looks and many more.

Assembling Your Makeup Kit

It’s not necessary to buy a ton of professional-quality makeup and tools, but do buy the best quality makeup you can afford. Cake foundation is the most common type used in theater because it covers well and blends easily, but you can also use street liquid foundation. More expensive foundations and powders do cover and last better than cheap drugstore brands; on the other hand, you can probably get away with cheap eyeshadows and lipsticks. Keep an assortment of brown eyeshadows and different shades of blush on hand, as well as brown and black eyeliner pencils and mascara. If you’re good at mixing colors, a theatrical quality “color wheelâ€, which is a single disc with red, blue, yellow, black, and white crà mes, can save you a lot of money in the long run on eyeshadow, eyeliner, and blush. You will also need a cosmetic pencil sharpener, cotton balls, and your favorite type of makeup remover.

A few good tools can drastically improve your makeup application. Sponges are necessary for applying foundation and blending. You’ll need several small brushes, especially if you’re going to use crà mes for eyeshadow or eyeliner. Q-tips can work in a pinch and are also indispensable for touching up smears and smudges. You’ll also need several large brushes for powder and blush. If you’re going to share the makeup kit, you’ll want to purchase disposable brushes, sponges, mascara wands, and mixing palettes. Finally, a toolbox or tacklebox will keep all of your makeup and tools organized.

Where can teen learn to apply make-up? Jan 2002

Some of my daughter’s friends have been experimenting with make-up (not usually for school, but for parties, dances, special occasions). My daughter really wants to start playing around with it, too. I know nothing about make-up. I’d like her to get started using appropriate products, colors, and techniques. Does anyone have any ideas or resource people? People who can show a young teen how to apply make-up properly and help her select the right products? What about department store “demos”? Anyone have any recommendations for particular stores, people, products? By the way, my daughter is biracial and has some acne problems. Thanks, Donna

Reply to mother looking for makeup help for 14 year old. I gave my daughter “Bobbi Brown’s Teenage Beauty..”. It’s a tremendous book dealing with average looking kids with braces, skin issues etc. It’s given her confidence with it’s great ideas about what to do for make up in all situations. The book addresses differences in skin tone as well as how to both enhance and play down facial features. Highly recommneded! Barbara I have two separate recommendations for your daughter: if she has acne problems, seeing a dermatologist will make a huge difference as well as provide her with good tools to learn how to take care of her face. The over-the-counter acne products tend to be either over-drying or simply not that effective in my experience.
