Makeup & Skincare – make up colors Expert: Dana Renee` – 7/7/2006

Question I am from Southern California and have normal skin. I have dark brown hair with a natural red hue to it. My eyes are dark brown with the same reddish tint. I have a tan right now, but my skin is usually very pale with lots of pink tones. I would like to know what makeup colors (eyeshadow and lipstick) would look good on me and would bring out the red tones in my eyes/hair. I also would like to tone down the pink tones in my face, so suggestions for foundation colors would be helpful.

Answer Hello Selena,

Here’s a guide to choosing colors to flatter your skin: http://www.ehow.com/how_3249_choose-colors-flatter.html(see “Spring” and “Summer”).

For pink and redness green is a neutralizer, here are some links as an example of what type of products you can use for this: http://www.physiciansformula.com/category.asp?categorid=110&page=1&scene=CONCEAL… (the green ones), http://www.physiciansformula.com/detail_list.asp?itemid=02471&scene=POWDERS&cate… http://www.physiciansformula.com/detail_list.asp?itemid=02494&scene=POWDERS&categorid=108#(bottom two powders). – this site also gives great instruction on how to apply the concealers – always apply any powder you use with a large blush brush as this prevents concealer and foundation from shifting.

Also, here are some basic instructions for applying makeup: ~NATURAL MAKEUP~ Things you may need: Foundation, Foundation Brush, Concealer, Powder, Blush, Eye shadow, Lip Brush, Mascara, Lip Gloss… -Start out simple, you don’t have to go all dramatic at first, like in this picture: http://www.grooveeffect.com/images/natural-makeup.jpg – this girl just has foundation (maybe concealer), powder, mascara, and lip balm, and maybe a bit of blush, :) but her makeup looks beautiful. *Application* -Foundation: Choose a foundation that blends perfectly or is just BARELY darker than your skin tone – if you’ll be having pictures taken, you’ll want the one that’s a little darker. Use your fingertips (specifically your middle and ring finger) or a foundation brush (found at Sally’s and most Beauty Supply stores) – for me it’s easier to use fingertips when applying my own makeup. To apply, dot the area you’ll start with, such as your forehead, then apply evenly over your entire forehead, same goes with the rest of your face, but be tender around the eye area. Apply 1/4 down your neck. -Concealer: Try this one, as directed, you can find it in most grocery and drug stores: http://www.physiciansformula.com/detail_list.asp?itemid=02467&scene=CONCEALERS&c… – apply on under eye circles (sometimes using your pinky finger is easiest) and other places as needed. -Powder: Apply over foundation, using a large blush brush. -Blush: For a natural look, choose one that’s slightly darker than your skin tone. Use a large blush brush in sweeping motions to apply directly under and in the same direction of your cheek bone (you can find the exact place by making a fish face in the mirror). Then apply on the plump part of your cheeks, (find this area by smiling). -Eye Shadow: For a natural look, choose colors that are slightly darker and/or slightly lighter than your skin tone. Apply a very light color from eyelid to brow bone. In your crease, apply a slightly darker color. For me, it’s easier to apply on my eyelid and crease using a dampened lip brush that’s been swept back and forth in the shadow – this technique also gives it a slightly richer look and helps it to stay on longer. But above the crease to the brow bone it’s best to use a eye shadow brush or applicator so that it goes on lighter. –Here are some charts that show where to apply the darker and lighter shades, as well as your blush:http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/looks/look_category.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEG… – this is just a guide, you can mix and match a little and do what flatters you. -Mascara: Choose a mascara that has a brush with lots of bristels close together such as this one shown in this pic on the far left: http://www.covergirl.com/cgcollection/eyes/mascara/mini_fantasticlash/index.jhtm… -Lips: Choose colors (as referenced for summer and spring) that flatter you and go with the eye makeup you are wearing: brown toned lip stick with brown shadows, mauves & pinks or even peach-toned lip glosses/sticks with teal, purples, or mauve & pink shadows, peachy tones with peachy shadows, reds or deep red lips can also go with purples, teals, grays & blacks, and pinks…
