The key to make up application is to remember that you are trying to enhance your own looks with make-up; not cover them up. In proper application you should strive to minimize the negatives by drawing attention away from them, and accentuate the positives by drawing attention to them.

Begin your make up application with a freshly cleansed and dried face. Apply a water-based moisturizer so your application will be even and to reduce caking. Make sure that your hair is pulled back and out of your eyes. You should have a light source in front of you that is casting light toward your face. That light should not be coming from one side, creating shadows on the other side of your face, lest you will get an uneven application.

The first thing to consider is the need for foundation. The best to use if your skin is in fairly good condition is a liquid, sheer, water-based cover-up. Use your fingers or a clean make-up sponge to dab it on your skin spread it with short, light strokes. Blend until even.

If you have skin problems such as blemishes, ruddiness, or dark circles, you may want to use a green-based concealer. Green counter-acts the reddish tones. Apply it to the problem area with your fingers or make-up sponge. You may then need to use a translucent powder to even the coverage.

Make sure that any foundation or powders you apply as a base match your skin tone for the most natural look possible. When purchasing cosmetics, don’t rely on testing them on your hand or arm, which can be a different shade than your face.

Powdered eye make up lasts longer, and is easiest to apply and blend. When applying eye shadow, two shades give you the best depth and tone. Start with the lighter of the colors and apply it with a sponge-tip applicator or brush to your lid. Then, take a small blush brush and load it with the darker color. Tap the brush on a tissue a couple of times so that excess powder will fall out. Gently, without pressing, brush the color on your upper lids, using the natural contour line as your guide.

Pencil eyeliner is the easiest to apply. Eyeliner appears more natural when only applied to the upper lids, just above the lashes. This gives your eyes a wider, more open look that is still subtle enough for every day use. For a more glamorous, night look, apply eyeliner along the lower lashes. For a dramatic look, use a darker eyeliner on the eye lid, such as black, and a bright or sparkly liner beneath the lower lashes.

If your eyebrows are light or sparse, you may want to line them with a pencil that is of the same color as your hair. Make sure that the pencil point is very sharp. Use short, even, quick strokes, going in the direction that the hair grows.

Mascara also opens up the eyes and makes them appear larger and more glamorous. Darker mascaras have a more exotic look, especially for light skinned/fair haired women. For a day look, try a lighter mascara, or even a clear. Clear mascara is very subtle, and yet it shapes your lashes and draws them out.

Never apply blush with the tiny applicators that often come in blush compacts; they are too small for even coverage (these are great for your eyeshadow, however). Invest in a good, large, soft blush brush. Brush over the color and tap on a tissue to remove excess powder. Brush the blush over the apples of your cheeks (smiling helps to get proper placement) in long strokes. Go from the inner cheek toward the side of the face. The brush should be lightly touching your skin. Never press a brush into your skin, or scrub it back and forth roughly. You’ll get too dark or uneven coverage, and probably ruin your brush.

Lips should be well moisturized for the most successful lipstick application. Always line the lips with a lip pencil or brush. If you have full lips, go slightly on the inside of the natural lip line. If your lips are thin, go slightly on the outside of the natural lip line. Start on the upper lip, from the center “bow†of the lip and pull the pencil or brush out toward the corner, then repeat on the other side. Never let it go all the way into the corner. It gives an older appearance, and can cake there. Do the same for the bottom lip, starting in the center and drawing the pencil or brush outward.

Lipstick goes on more evenly and more controlled if you use a brush to apply it, even if it is in a tube. A light coating of clear or tinted gloss will keep the lips looking moist and natural.
