Hypoallergenic Makeup
You should be aware, though, that the simple term “hypoallergenic makeup” does not hold the same meaning for every cosmetic company.
The Food and Drug Administration, the federal entity that governs makeup companies, does not have a specific definition or standard for a company to uphold in order to use the term hypoallergenic.
This means that when a company stamps hypoallergenic makeup on their product, it means exactly what that particular company wants it to mean.
You should also know that manufacturers of cosmetics labeled as hypoallergenic makeup have no requirements to substantiate their claims of their product’s hypoallerganicity to the FDA.
So, what is a girl left to do?
If virtually anyone can stamp the word “hypoallergenic” on any product that they so choose, how do you know what is quality and what is garbage?
The best advice is to stick with the companies that have a known name and a good reputation.
You can go to sites such as epinions.com and Yahoo! Answers to find out what other people have experienced with a product.
Alternatively, you can purchase the product and try it. If it irritates your skin or causes you any discomfort you simply return it.
It is a little known fact that you can return used makeup to the store from where you purchased it.
Even if the package says that it is hypoallergenic makeup, you purchase it and find out it is not what you wanted, you may return it.
Some stores have a policy that you must have the receipt or that the return must be made within a certain number of days, but as long as you hang on to your receipt and you return it within the required time, you are good.
