How to Do Your Makeup
How to Do Your Makeup Doing your makeup is a cinch with these tips
There aren’t any rules where painting your face is concerned—however, there are four standard looks every woman should learn to master. Here are a few tips for doing your makeup for any occasion. In the meantime, do your makeup online by uploading a photo to our virtual makeup studio.
Makeup Look 1: Light Eyes / Light Mouth
How to do your makeup for a garden party? Take a fresh, seemingly effortless approach that appears au naturel. If your complexion isn’t in tip-top condition, fake it by following a few simple rules: Enhance the inherent luminosity of your skin with a tinted moisturizer and shimmery cream highlighter (applied to the temples and brow bone). If you’re experiencing breakouts, cover them with hide-and-heal concealer and sweep bronzer onto the temples, cheeks and forehead with a fluffy blush brush. You can make this look dewy by misting Evian spray water on your face (hold the can 12 inches from your skin). As a general rule, eyebrow powders yield more natural-looking results than pencils, however, a tinted brow gel may be all you need to cop this style. Eyes and lips are best kept simple with a hint of peachy or nude color. Subtle brown eye liner and mascara are suggested, but always optional.
*Recommended for: school, work, job interview, or Sunday brunch
Makeup Look 2: Light Eyes / Dark Mouth
Since this look is all about the lips—in all of their luscious glory—you’ll want to exfoliate them lightly (a regular facial scrub will work) and follow with a moisturizing balm. Do this every evening for a pristine pout. Even out your skin tone with foundation, and sweep a bit of pinky blush or bronzer on the temples, cheeks and forehead. Light eyes require only a hint of shadow at the crease, but you may want to add more definition by using a pearly shadow on the brow bone and a layer of mascara on the top bottom lashes. Outline your lips in red pencil and follow with red lipstick (or a similarly bright color). Paint it on with a lip brush for a precise, suede-like finish. Gloss is optional.
*Recommended for: a first date, anniversary diner, or other romantic occasion (make sure your lipstick is kiss-proof)
Makeup Look 3: Dark Eyes / Dark Mouth
This vampy 1920s-inspired face is one you might see while promenading the Champs-Élysà es in Paris, where women are as discerning about appearances as they are about their chocolate mousse. Skin takes on a smooth, velvety appearance with a medium-coverage eye concealer and foundation—both of which can be blended with your finger tips. Turn to blush and bronzer for a soft glow, since dark lips can washout fair or medium-skinned faces. Dress up the eyes with dark brown, black or metallic charcoal shadows, which necessitate plenty of blending with a contouring eyeshadow brush (keep the lid and brow bone pale to avoid a sooty look). An opaque ivory shadow can be a clean, but equally dramatic alternative to black when applied on the lid. False eyelashes lend a hint of drama to either look.
*Recommended for: a party, black tie wedding, or night on the town
Makeup Look 4: Dark Eyes / Light Mouth
The most sultry and versatile of all, dark eyes and a light pout transition effortlessly from a moonlit picnic in the park to a trendy nightclub. Deep plum and jade shadows work just as well as the usual dark-hued suspects, but either way, you’ll want to smudge black liner into the top and bottom lashes. When eyes are this dark and smoldering, eyebrows should be polished with a pencil or powder. A creamy pale lip in an opalescent peach tone complements all skin tones.
*Recommended for: any evening or dressy day occasion
