How should I do my makeup with a red prom dress?
I would suggest some really dramatic black eyes. Here’s how I’d do it…
Prime your eyes with something really good (either Urban Decay Primer Potion or TooFaced Shadow Insurance). Apply a pale highlighter under your brows. Sweep some neutral coloured eyeshadow across your eyelid and a slightly darker (but still neutral and nude and understated) brown-tan colour in your crease to make your eyes pop. Add a dot of highlighter to your inner corners (or a bit of white eyeliner and blend it out, if you don’t have a liquid highlight). Line your lower lash line with a black pencil eyeliner (Urban Decay 24/7 eye pencil doesn’t budge, try that). Then take a black liquid eyeliner (felt tip liners, like Bourjois Liner Feutre or similar, are easier to work with) and thickly line your upper lash line. Wing it out at the corners and connect the wing to the top line. Curl your eyelashes and add 2-3 coats of mascara for really dramatic lashes.
For your lips, try a soft pink or rose colour, not too dramatic. The problem with going dramatically red with a red dress is it’s a bit too matchy-matchy to match the dress colour, and it clashes if you don’t match it. So go for softer lips – a pink, a rose, or even a peach or soft coral if you want something warmer toned.
Make sure your foundation is done well, set it with pressed powder, and add a little blush – powder blush is more neutral so it won’t draw the attention away from your eyes. Just choose a blush that looks good with your skin tone.
So to summarise… dramatic black eyeliner, good foundation, flattering blush, soft neutral lips.
