Etsy Labs Archive: How to Make Lip Balm
I don’t even know where to start on this one! First, to “Web promotion specialist” – it is *illegal* to sell any product marketed as containing sunscreen without first having the formula approved by the FDA and tested for SPF abilities. Sunscreen is considered a drug and drug testing costs lots of money!
Second, while certain varieties of some essential oils may indeed be used in lip products there are numerous safety issues one must first be aware of prior to using EOs on the lips. Educate yourself from a reliable source before trying this.
Third, don’t even *think* about using a recycled container to put lip balm into for sale or even to give away. You’ve no idea what nasties may be hiding in the nooks and crannies of a recycled soda cap or otherwise recycled container! It would suck to get sued for giving someone a fungal infection on their lips!
Fourth, please don’t color your lip balm with “bits of old lipstick”! The FDA has a specific list of approved colorants (and within that list, colorants specifically approved for lip or eye use). Presumably your old lipstick would have used the approved colorants but again, bacteria and fungi can be lurking in there. Maybe for your own use but not to give away or sell. Disgusting.
Lastly, while anyone can melt some premade base or even put together a few oils and waxes and call it lip balm, being able to make a GOOD lip balm takes a lot of work and money to develop a safe, effective and worthwhile formula. As an etsy artisan who actually DOES this for a living, I am insulted at the implication that this is “easy” and could be considered a quick money maker! I have spent years perfecting my craft, so to have the very site that profits from my expertise and sales suggest it is easy and anyone can (or should) do it is ridiculous. There are numerous FDA regulations and manufacturing guideines that must be followed to sell cosmetics (yes, lip balm is a cosmetic) not to mention the need for some decent knowledge about what you are doing, and liability insurance (several hundred dollars per year). We’re not talking about selling a scarf here, people! These are products applied to (and thus absorbed into) the body and if someone is injured by a careless person throwing together some lip balm from a blog tutorial in hopes of making a quick buck not only does that person get sued but it casts an ill light on the entire handmade cosmetics industry. How many people are going to buy cosmetic products off etsy if word gets around of inferior quality or, worse yet, injury resulting from use of such products? We all look bad.
So while this is a fun at home project to kill some time on a rainy afternoon, PLEASE do not haphasardly go into selling it. There is plenty of room for all who want to put the time, money and effort into creating and selling cosmetics. Just please do it the right way – for everyone’s sake.
