E.L.F. Cosmetics Review A Line of $1 Make-Up Competes Against Higher Priced Products

Jul 4, 2008 Kelly Whitt

An e-mail circulating among women claims that e.l.f. cosmetics is being discounted to only one dollar by a department store such as Nordstrom’s due to repackaging. A quick check of snopes.com shows that the e-mail is false. The makeup is not associated with any department store. It is simply a cosmetics company with very low prices. So, given thier low prices and the knowledge that with certain discounts, such as entering the code CAROLINA with orders of under $15 to get 50% off your order (so each product is only 50 cents instead of $1), it still looks like a great deal, regardless of the fake Nordstrom’s story. But the main question is: Is the product any good?

Online Ordering Vs. In the Store

If you find e.l.f. makeup in a store such as Target you can see what you are getting and there is no wait. Online ordering is a matter of buyer beware. A browse of epinions finds a lot of unhappy customers with long waits in the two-month plus range and orders that are incomplete when they do arrive.

The Suite101 test products were ordered on June 11 and arrived on July 3. The This is a longer than normal wait time for most products ordered online, yet shorter than most of the epinion complaints. The bottom line here would be: find it in the store if you really want to try it, or otherwise be prepared to wait.

Quality of e.l.f. Makeup

The cosmetics order arrived complete. The products were ordered by an individual and sent to her home address so e.l.f. had no idea that the items were for a review. The makeup order included one All Over Cover Stick in Light, a Regular & Waterproof Mascara Duo in Black, two Plumping Lip Glazes in Mauve Berry and Mocha Ice, five Brightening Eye Color eye shadows in Drama, Matte Mauve, Butternut, Pretty N’Pink, and Luxe, and a Duo Eye Shadow Cream in Butter Pecan. With the order came a free item, the Lip Gloss Cell Phone Charms in Flirt and Fairy.

The All Over Cover Stick had a nice, fruity smell, but the consistency was surprising. It was not like other coverup sticks such as Cover Girl; this one went on with more of a liquid consistency. Also, its extra wide shape made it difficult to pinpoint problem areas such as undereye circles. Compared to the tester’s usual brand, this one was a step down.

The Regular & Waterproof Mascara Duo had a slightly strange smell. The consistency of the mascara was on the thick and creamy side, but it went on without gooping or clumping. The mascara stayed on without flaking and lasted a long time. This product was deemed as good as the tester’s regular brands, which range from drugstore to Mary Kay to Clinique.

The Plumping Lip Glazes have two sides, a pearl glossy side that tingles upon application and a color side. The plumping side did not produce any noticeable plumping effect despite the tingling sensation, but then neither do most lip products that claim to do the same thing. The color goes on well and stays for a reasonable amount of time, but not nearly so long as certain products such as Cover Girl Outlast. While the plumping side is minty smelling; the color side also had a bit of an unpleasant chemical smell similar to the mascara. Overall, the Plumping Lip Glazes are a fair buy.

The Brightening Eye Color eye shadows came in an array of colors and the color stayed on the eyelids all day. The colors went on dark and were dramatic, most notably the compact named Drama, which contained silver tones. The eye shadow and brushes were standard drug store quality but due to their longevity and low price, the tester rated these above her regular brands.

The Duo Eye Shadow Cream is not the typical powder brush-on type of makeup but a creamier kind that can be applied with your fingertip. Like the other eyeshadows, these colors were of good quality and held up throughout the day, giving them an above-average ranking, especially considering the price.

The final products were the two Cell Phone Charm Lip Glosses that came free. The colors were playful and the smell was childish, which made them suitable to teens or for young girls’ playtimes. The Fairy is a light, shiny pink while the Flirt goes on with a slightly brighter pink, although this one also is mainly a shiny gloss. These lip glosses would appeal mostly to the younger crowd.

The final verdict? Use caution if ordering online. Some of the products are misses, while others are hits. And at these prices, you can test them for yourself to see what works for you!
