We (my littlest ones and I) started out picking yellow buttercups, but then my oldest branched out into the hayfield to pick wildflowers (daisies, clover and other variations of yellow flowers) and my husband combed the edge of our field bordering the street for more wildflowers. After gathering a few buckets worth, we ventured back into the house to assemble bouquets as a family. We made up about 20 of them along with two large tumbler cups of flower petals (roses, buttercups, & hydrangea) and packed up our van to head out to the cemetery.

When we started walking the grounds of our small church, we knew immediately we did not have enough flowers, but we dressed up as many as we could with our blossoms, stopping at each site to recognize the names and dates of each veteran. We saw confederate soldiers, WWI and WWII veterans, and Vietnam & Korean War veterans. I believe there was also a Desert Storm veteran there. As for any Iraqi or Afghanistan war heroes, I don't honestly know.

It was a meaningful experience for my husband and I, and I'm so glad we did this. I'm not really sure how it affected our oldest (he's 13), but I know our youngest didn't really understand...I'm sure they will over time.

We truly are blessed to be living in America and I thank our veterans from the bottom of my heart for their personal sacrifice for me and my family. We appreciate and honor you this day.

Thank you, American serviceman for all that you have sacrificed. I only have the freedom to voice this thank you in a free country because of you. Thank you for your courage and determination in the face of the foes of America. Thank you for holding the line, for filling the gap, for standing between those who would destroy even my children. Thank you for the sweat, tears and blood offered up for freedom's sake in the mud, sand and snow. Only you know what you sacrifice as you bear it in silence and honor. You are our country's greatest citizens, the very finest to ever be called Americans.

Thank you, families of these patriots. Thank you for the support and love you give "our boys". Thank you for the sleepless nights alone. Thank you for keeping the home fires burning. Thank you for the sacrifice of so many precious moments.

On this day, I am humbled by the service to me by better men than I. For the men and women who willingly toil, bleed and die on domestic and foreign soils, I honor you. I pray that God Almighty remains your High Tower and Strength, and that all Americans embrace your honorable service with humility and heartfelt gratitude. I pray that we honor you by keeping America as you would have it, a land of the free and home of the brave.
