Bright Makeup Trends for Any Skin Tone – The Early Show

(CBS) This season’s hottest makeup trends are filled with lots of color.

What’s the right color combination for your complexion?

Style and beauty expert Jenn Falik shared options for every skin tone Tuesday, on “The Early Show.”

JEWEL-TONED EYES
The brighter you go with color, the more you have to be sure to anchor the color on top of the lid with a more neutral brown/black lining the lower lash line.

BRIGHT LIPS
Try a semi-sheer color. Matte lips are gorgeous, but sheer colors blend better, creating a more “you” shade. Plus, you can layer semi-sheers on for the level of brightness you want, using the same lipstick to go from a pretty hint of pink during the day to a fabulous neon at night.
Use a lipstick primer. This one is a must if you’re wearing a really bright lipstick, since highly pigmented color slides around and fades relatively quickly.

CRAYOLA NAILS
The rule here, well, there are none because it is so easy to experiment and play with nail colors. This is where you take chances and have fun, worst case scenario, you remove it!
If you are very fair, avoid yellows or greens, it makes hands look sallow.

Note: It’s all about choosing the most appropriate colors and applying it in the right way. No matter your skin tone, when you are doing bright makeup, you need to use a primer on the lips and the lids. A primer is not always so necessary when wearing subtle shades – with neutral makeup it is not as obvious if your lipstick feathers or your eye shadow falls – but with bright colors – it is a MESS!

Falik says she loves Le Metier de Beaute Magic for lips and L’Oreal Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base for lids.

FAIR SKINNED COMPLEXION/NIGHT OUT LOOK

Eyes
L’Oreal Studio Secrets Crystal Shadow Duo (purple/silver) – $8 at drugstores (THICK POWDER)
A bold purple is good for hazel green eyes. The bolder the color you do on your upper lid, the lower eye lid has to be anchored with a more wearable hue. In this case, we used sliver. It can be a dark brown, a deep navy in this case her skin is so fair. If you have a darker or olive skin, you can get away with a lot more. So a lot depends on what you’re wearing and goes with your overall look.

Lips
Tarte Natural Lip Stain Pencil in Amused (fuschia deep stain) $24 at TarteCosmetics.com.
For fair skin, you can go bright, you just have to make sure it doesn’t look heavy, which is why a stain is ideal. This pink is rich, which contrasts nicely with a creamy complexion. Anything lighter would wash a light complexion out. This will instead warm up a look.

Nails
Hard Candy Pretty in Punk (bright fuschia pink) – $5 at Wal-Mart
When you have very pale hands, a hot pink is the best choice for bold nails. Blues and purples can look kind of Goth-inspired, but this pink is just a punched up version of a classic – on-trend and still flattering.

DARK-SKINNED COMPLEXION/DAY LOOK

Lips
TheBalm Read My Lips in Gossip (sheerish matte pink) – $22 at TheBalm.com.
With a dark complexion, you should focus on the lips. We’ve chosen a sheer pink lipstick; it’s bright and still warm. It’s a bright pink lipstick. A darker skin tone should go with a color that looks more rich and less neon. Something can be bright but it still can be warm. It’s buildable. If you want it to be more dramatic you can had layers. It’s hard to find a liner to match a lipstick, so just add layers. The lipstick and eye shadow do not need to match. We used green on the eyes and it’s a crme formula so that gives you more versatility on how intense you want it to be. If you are fair-skinned or olive-skinned, a lot of times a bright color can look like a costume, so when you go with something with a gloss in it, you get the color and it does not look as stark.

Eyes
Urban Decay Cream Shadow in Radium (blue) – $17 at Sephora.com
On dark skin, green is absolutely gorgeous. It enhances brown eyes and frames the lash line in a very flattering way. Also, we chose a cream formula because it can be worked into the skin as you move up the lid to blend nicely and create a subtle smokey eye in an unexpected hue. And darker skin has a tendency to absorb color so you can go bolder, and green is best when it is bold.

Nails
Milani Neon Fresh Teal – $4.50 at drugstores
This skin tone perfectly complements this teal, making it look bright, but not shocking. I love how the teal relates to the green on her eyes (it has green in it), but isn’t matchy-matchy.

OLIVE COMPLEXION/WEEKEND LOOK

Lips
Mark Gloss Gorgeous – $9 at MeetMark.com
With olive skin, I think it is important to have a glossy finish to whatever lip color you choose. The gold tones in olive skin just look extra amazing when there is shimmer and shine involved. So we put Maggie in a bright red with lots of pink undertones, as opposed to a straight pink, because it plays nicely against the warmness of her skin. A pure pink would look out of place on her coloring- so anchoring it with a hint of red makes it much more wearable.

Eyes
Aerie Color Forever Liner in Plum Lace – $8.50 at Aerie.com
This deep blue accentuates the whites of her eyes, making them really pop- and with olive skin, you want to be careful to avoid anything that could feel pastel- they tend to look chalky. So tend towards richer shades- which is why this indigo is a much better choice for her than a brighter blue. Also- we chose a soft liner instead of a shadow because it allows for precise application and then can be slightly blended out to make the color more sheer and wearable.

Nails
YSL La Laque #42 (bright purple) – $20 at NeimanMarcus.com
We did a bold bright purple on the nails. When your skin is a little more olive, you tend to look good in the classic jewel tones, like reds and purples. For darker skin, we like the bright teal color on the nails and then for the fair skin a bright pink will work.
