“Hey, I’m Chelsea Bagozzi with suburbanheresy.com and I’m going to talk a little bit about becoming a makeup artist. There are so many different ways to become a makeup artist. There’s schools, there’s classes, there’s hands on work, there’s different jobs you can take that will teach you how to do things, there’s a million ways that you can, that you can learn how to do it. Personally, when I first started doing makeup, I started out in cosmetology school, I was doing hair, and I had a makeup instructor and I developed a love for it and so I started doing it a lot with my makeup instructor. We did some hands on work in Las Vegas for some runway, some runway stuff. It was really cool, and umm, and just doing a lot of hands on work like that, I started becoming better and better at it, from learning from my mentor and having someone teaching me every week. It was, that was, the that was how I got my foot in the door, and then I started working at a salon and I did makeup in my salon and then after a few years, I got a job with MAC and I started working with MAC, and MAC MAC cosmetics will send you to their basic training and they teach you all different kinds of basic eyeshadow applications to funky eyeshadow MAC application, how to apply false lashes, they teach you everything. So I worked for MAC for several years and then I taught makeup classes for a while and I’ve done makeup for a photo shoots and for weddings and and all kinds of different things. If you want to get your foot in the door doing makeup, there are a lot of different things that you can do. You can look on-line and find makeup schools in your area. Most states do not require you to have a license to be a makeup artist. You can pretty much just become a makeup artist really easily. You don’t have to take a test like you do for hair. You don’t have to do anything special. You just need a lot of hands on experience. So, I know in California, there’s several makeup artistry schools and you can go to school and you pay a certain amount of money and you go to school and they teach you everything you need to know and it’s it’s really beneficial. It’s a great way to get started and they also, those schools are great because they know a lot of people. If you want to do makeup in you know, for films and photography and stuff like that, that’s a great way to go because those people have their foot in the door with umm, you know, different producers and different companies so that you can, you know, jump right in and start doing makeup for films. If you’re not, if you’re not able to do something like that, a good way to start doing makeup is to work at a retail store. You can work at a umm, at any department store. Get a job in the cosmetics department, start out at an easy brand, something like Clinique or umm, you know, err, Lancome, or Estee Lauder, something that’s a little bit more about skin care and with people come in and you’ll do makeup on them and hands on experience is the best way to learn how to do makeup and a lot of hands on experience, so if you’re wanting to be a makeup artist, get your hands on anybody you can. Your friends, your family, just start doing makeup on them, start building up your kit. The more experience you have, the easier it is to get jobs. The more, your name will be out there, so start out, those are just a couple of ways that you can start out doing makeup, build up your kit, get a lot of hands on experience and try and get a job somewhere where you can get a lot of hands on experience so that you’re doing five to ten makeup applications a day, and doing that you’re really going to boost your self-confidence, but also get a lot better and you learn a ton by doing that.”
